[ARCHIVED] Organics Recycling for Businesses and Multifamily Properties

Organics Recycling

Beginning January 1, 2022, California's Senate Bill (SB) 1383 requires all businesses and multi-family properties to arrange for organic waste collection services including food waste and green waste collection*. The Organics Recycling Program will reduce methane emissions by diverting organic material from the landfill. The collected organic materials will be recycled into products like soil products and renewable energy.

SB 1383 is a state law aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the amount of organic waste sent to landfills via collection and edible food recovery programs. Food waste is the second-largest contributor of organic waste in landfills. When organic material is landfilled, it decomposes and produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas (GHG).

For assistance in setting up collection services to fit your needs and to comply with state laws, contact EJ Harrison at 805-647-1414 or visit www.ejharrison.com.

*Businesses and multi-family properties with 5 or more units may also choose to self-haul their organics and other recyclable waste. Additionally, some may be eligible for an exemption waiver.

All businesses are encouraged to fill out the online Service Needs and Waiver Application to apply for a waiver and/or let us know about your organic waste service needs.
