Traffic Advisory - Traffic study coming to Telephone Road
Ventura, CA – Starting this week, the City of Ventura’s Transportation Division will begin a traffic control study along Telephone Road with lane reconfigurations between Victoria Avenue and Kimball Road. The proposed lane reconfiguration reduces the number of commuter travel lanes from three down to two lanes while adding a lane for cyclists. The study is expected to be completed by June 4, 2020.
Funded by Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the roadway project currently encourages reduced speeds in the area and creates a buffer for cyclists and pedestrians. Motorists and cyclists are asked to slow down through the area and proceed with caution.
“This project is part of the City of Ventura’s ongoing effort to consider the safety of all road users, including motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,” said Ventura Mayor Matt LaVere. “Any improvements to City roadways are designed to enhance roadway safety for current and projected traffic demands. At the same time, the City also looks for opportunities to expand safety and resources for bicycling for commuting or exercise.”
Since 2015, this area of roadway has experienced 43 collisions with 27 injuries related to unsafe speeds. Additionally, there are bike lanes on Telephone Road from Olivas Park Drive to Victoria Avenue and from Kimball Road to Wells Avenue; however, Telephone Road between Kimball Road and Victoria Avenue has a critical gap in bike lanes.
Since 2017, Ventura has been named a bronze-level bicycle friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists. With more than 60 miles of bicycle lanes, 35 miles of bike routes and paths, and over 400 lockers and bike racks, the City is committed to creating sustainable transportation choices and enhancing recreational resources.
