Reverse Osmosis

Barrier 2

Reverse Osmosis (RO) is the same type of treatment process used in kidney dialysis and for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. In this step, water is pushed through pores that are 50,000 times smaller than the smallest viruses. Even salts and other chemicals are removed by RO. In fact, RO water is so pure that minerals need to be added back in prior to drinking it so it is healthful for the human body. Water this pure is too pure for our bodies and the pipes that would transport it to our houses. The water passing RO is monitored before it goes to the next step.

Did You Know?

RO is the same process used by bottled water companies and used in removing salt from ocean water (desalination) for producing drinkable water.
