Properly Disposing of Household Hazardous Waste

Many household items cannot simply be placed in the trash or recycling bin when it comes time to throw them away. The City holds Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) events on a monthly basis as a free service to residents to properly dispose of hazardous materials. These events are held the third Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 5275 Colt Street. Waste is only accepted at the facility between specified days and hours. Curbside collection is not part of the program – please do not leave HHW material in orange bins curbside for E.J. Harrison weekly pickup. Take advantage of this great opportunity to protect yourself and our environment from dangerous chemicals and wastes. Remember to refrain from storing HHW products in food containers. It is important to keep them in their original containers and ensure labels remain in-tact. Never mix leftover materials together as incompatible materials might react, ignite, or explode.

What Happens to Household Hazardous Waste at Collection Events?

Many of the hazardous materials disposed of at our HHW events are recycled. The City of Ventura uses a service provider and certified waste hauler to transport waste to certified disposal facilities. Flammable liquids such as gasoline, diesel, kerosene and oil-based paints are blended into fuel and used to power cement kilns. The glass, plastic and mercury in fluorescent lights and the acid, plastic and metals in batteries are recovered and recycled for use in new products. Latex paint is reprocessed and mixed with new paint or sold as completely recycled paint. Used oil and anti-freeze are re-refined and sold as recycled products.

The most environmentally friendly way to dispose of unused hazardous materials is to reuse it for its intended purpose. Usable items, like paint, household cleaners and automotive fluids, dropped off at our HHW events are segregated and offered to residents of Ventura for free. Material availability is subject to change and materials are given away on first come, first serve basis.
