Hazmat Program

The goal of the Hazmat Program is to provide for the safety of the citizens and the environment. We accomplish this by mitigating accidental releases, monitoring clean-up operations, working with law enforcement agencies and continued training at the local and regional levels. The hazardous materials team also provides engine company services to the citizens of Ventura.

The City of Ventura's hazardous materials unit provides 24-hour emergency response services to incidents occurring within the city and throughout Ventura County. We also serve as technical support for first responders who require additional information. There are 27 trained personnel throughout the department that can be called upon to fill the role of State Certified technician or specialist.

The hazmat team works to identify unknown substances, assess threats, coordinate multi-agency responses and mitigates spills and releases. We assist in clean-up operations working with contractors and County Environmental Health. We also support law enforcement with special operations.

Our responses also include; radiological, biological, chemical threats, agricultural emergencies, and the decontamination of victims and fire personnel.
