Advanced Purification Process

Upon construction, VenturaWaterPure will use a proven four-stage process that includes (1) Membrane Bioreactor*; (2) Ultraviolet Light Disinfection*; (3) Reverse Osmosis (RO); and (4) Ultraviolet Light / Advanced Oxidation Process (UV/AOP). The result is purified water that exceeds drinking water quality standards.

This first demonstration facility opened to the public in 2016 and supported by the Water Research Foundation. The facility was recognized for its comprehensive testing measures. Results from the facility advanced research for potable reuse for communities statewide.

Here’s how the VenturaWaterPure purification process works:

Treatment Process-v2-05

1. Membrane Bioreactor*

Removes microorganisms, bacteria, and pathogens.

The membrane bioreactor (MBR) provides a biological treatment that removes organic materials and many chemicals. Then the water is forced through membrane filters with pore sizes that are 1/300th the diameter of hair. This blocks many particles, protozoa, bacteria, and viruses from passing through.

2. Ultraviolet Light (UV)*

Destroys viruses, bacteria, and protozoa.

High-intensity ultraviolet light disinfects the water, inactivating protozoa, bacteria, and viruses.

3. Reverse Osmosis (RO)

Blocks salts, chemicals, and viruses.

Reverse osmosis pushes pressurized water through a barrier that blocks salts, chemicals, and viruses from passing through. This treatment is commonly used by bottled water companies.  

4. Ultraviolet Light and Advanced Oxidation Process (UV / AOP)

Breaks down cell walls, DNA, and any remaining pollutants.

During this step, an oxidant such as sodium hypochlorite (bleach) is combined with high-intensity ultraviolet light to break down contaminants and trace pollutants, destroying cell walls, DNA, and other human-generated contaminates such as pharmaceuticals.
